Adding some links. Anguisette is a Jacqueline Carey fanlisting (thanks, Danni!). I tried joining but it didn't work. Hopefully that will be fixed. Elegyfordarkness is a Yahoo group, devoted to discussion about Godslayer. Not much traffic at the moment, understandably! And Kushiel's Legacy is a Live Journal community.

December 3, 2003
Well, it's been a while. Jacqueline has updated her site for December. Big news: she is indeed working on a new Terre D'Ange trilogy with Imriel as the protagonist. "...puberty's going to be hell"!

Also, Avatar is number 10 on Amazon's Top 10 Editors' Picks: SF&F. Andrea at House Montrève has a scan of the cover of the Dutch translation of Avatar, Kushiëls Werktuig. This journal talks about Tor, Jacqueline's publisher, looking for more material in the Kushiel vein.

Carey's Crew is having web host problems, it should be up again soon.

One of the denizens of Uen Detorik, Imriela, has created this beautiful version of Phèdre's marque.

November 2, 2003
Jacqueline has updated her site. She's got a short story coming out in an anthology in February, 2004. That might help tide us over until next November! : ) The story is called "The Isle of Women" and it's in Emerald Magic : Great Tales of Irish Fantasy.

New event: Jacqueline will be giving a reading and talk at Michigan State University in East Lansing. It's on November 7th, at 7:30pm. This is part of the Michigan Science Fiction Writers Series of the University's library.

Received an image of the Dutch cover of Kushiel's Chosen (Kushiëls Keuze over there) from fellow fan Frank. Thanks, Frank! And Jessie sent me links to a bunch of fan art. (I'll add them to the art page) Thanks, Jessie!

October 8, 2003
I just picked up the new (Oct. 03) issue of Locus at Pandemonium Books and there's a pic of Jacqueline in it. Taken last year at Westercon, when she did her interview with them, I believe. It's in the magazine because their news section reports that she sold Elegy for Darkness (this is before the recent name change) to Tor.

September 27, 2003
Jacqueline made her update for October a few days early, since she is going off on a trip to Eire (Ireland). Elegy for Darkness has had its title changed to Godslayer and won't be out until November 2004. FOO!

September 2, 2003
Monthly update on Jacqueline's site. There's a contest involving figuring out which Shelley poem she quotes in Avatar. I'm clueless and too lazy to investigate. Jacqueline will be a guest next summer at a writer's conference in Aberdeen, Washington (Kurt Cobain's hometown, by the way). I've added it to Events.

August 25, 2003
Danni at House Eglantine found this: the cover of Chosen is included in the book Spectrum 9. And, on the advice of Dana M., I added what algolagnia means for Mandrake and Valerian Houses on the Lore page.

August 18, 2003
Was looking at the August issue of Locus today at Pandemonium Books and saw that Chosen was ranked at #5 in the voting for their award for Best Fantasy Novel. Not too shabby. Avatar was also #5 on their hardback bestseller list and was listed on a bunch of other bestseller lists that they print in the magazine. Yay for Jacqueline!

Whew, it's been a while since my last update. Just finished with my first web design class (tonite was our final project presentation). Still learning, still learning. Anyway, here's a new review of Avatar that I found, in SFcrowsnest.

July 27, 2003
JC has updated her site for August a few days early. Warnings that there is more than one author named Jacqueline Carey, a shout-out to House Montrève, and a link to a Dutch review of Dart (in Dutch). Look under "Recensies." Oh, and the edit of Elegy is finished but no release date is available yet.

And Kushiel's Avatar is at the top of Locus Magazine's hardcover bestseller list for July. : )

July 22, 2003
I've added a family tree of House Courcel to the Lore page. Other people have made them, and I just couldn't help myself, I wanted to make my own! : ) It's a .pdf file, so Acrobat is needed to view it.

July 20, 2003
I found this interesting sheet on the web (you need Adobe Acrobat to see it). It's a list of quotes, praise that Kushiel's Legacy has gotten from reviewers, put together by JC's Australian publisher. I just thought it looked nice. I've added it and some previously mentioned quizzes to the Links page, under "Misc."

Yesterday was JC's last signing (according to her site). So the Events page will be sadly empty, probably until Elegy is released. Jacqueline hasn't said anything so this is just pure speculation, but she attended a local Michigan convention last January. Who knows, she may be at the next one. Worth keeping an eye on Confusion 2004.

House Montrève has the Dutch cover of Kushiel's Chosen up. As with Dart, it is the same art as on the english versions of the book. The title in Dutch is Kushiëls Keuze. Andrea has also found an alternate Dutch cover that was never used, featuring a different picture (although it looks like the same artist).

July 16, 2003
Egads, the cover of the third part of the German edition of Dart is awful. At least Phèdre was sexy looking in the other two. This one, she looks like Xena, and not in a good way. Andrea's House Montrève is getting some good content. Very cool!

July 12, 2003
Found a new piece of art on the web: Phedre No Delaunay - Work in progress by Andrea S. Loot. I think she is also the webmistress of a new fan site, House Montrève. It looks embryonic, none of the links work; but we'll see what happens with it in the future. Looks nice.

Another Avatar review from About.com. And JC gets mentioned a few times in this Publishers Weekly article on fantasy sales and marketing. Carey's Crew has undergone a summer facelift (like this site and House Eglantine).

July 2, 2003
The official site was updated. Jacqueline has begun editing Elegy for Darkness. She says it will take some time. Dammit, I don't want to be patient! : ) Also, there's a couple of new tattoo pics and a movie recommendation by Jacqueline: Spirited Away. I haven't seen it but everyone I've heard says it's amazing. I've seen other films by the same people and they are very, very good.

And another Kushiel quiz, this one on which house you belong in (hmmm, those pics look familiar! ; ) ).

Added a couple more appearances on the Events page over the weekend. And the official site was updated today. Not much news to report. If you ever meet or interview Jacqueline, don't ask her where she gets her ideas from. She hates that. : )

Lastly, a new Yahoo Group, Sangoire, was just started.

I know it's only been 10 days, but I feel like I haven't updated in forever... Anyway, I got my copy of Earth Begotten a while back. Here's a scan of the cover. I've added it to the bibliography too.

Cool new JC fan site: Carey's Crew. Sigh, another good-looking site for me to be envious of... ; )

The German edition of Dart has been split into three volumes, not two, like we previously thought. Die Auserwählte 3. Im Namen der Königin (The Chosen One 3: In the Name of the Queen) is the title. Thanks to Danni for this news. I don't know what the German publisher's racket is, why they have to split it into three volumes. Do Germans not read long books? Give me a break... Just my opinion, of course.

There was a review of Avatar in the April 2003 issue of Locus Magazine. Their contributing editor Faren Miller liked the other two books and the same with the third. Here's an excerpt:

As the earlier books explored the complex, sometimes contradictory nature of love, this one extends the investigation to divinity itself: the nature of our gods, the psychological and metaphysical bedrock beneath centuries of theological prettying-up and obfuscation. With help from a huge but vividly characterized cast, Phèdre's final quest turns these grand abstractions into the stuff of life.

I'm a little late with this, but I was out of town for most of this week. The official site has been updated for May. Highlights from her West Coast tour, new tattoo pic, and some new dates in the Midwest. Sigh, still no East Coast (damn you, Tor!).

There was a nice chat with JC on Scifi.com last Tuesday. Sorry I didn't put a reminder here. The transcript will eventually be archived on their site.

I just found a new Tor site that I guess is some kind of online press kit for Avatar. I found it through Google but it doesn't seem to be linked on their main site (which in my opinion sucks--sorry, Tor people). Oh well, someone is doing something good on this one. Besides review quotes, there's an essay by JC, and a tour schedule. According to this page, there's another chat scheduled in May and a new signing date, in Iowa in June.

Also, a new review of Avatar added.

April 21, 2003
I finished Avatar a few days ago. Sigh...definitely a great end to the trilogy, although I'm kinda sad that it's over. But there are hints that she may continue Imriel's story. He's definitely an interesting character in his own right, worthy of a whole 'nother Terre D'ange series. : )

Here's a recent interview that JC did with Publishers Weekly.

Avatar is #23 on the New York Times Hardcover Fiction Bestseller List. Hee! Here's hoping it goes much higher.

I HAVE IT! Yes, Kushiel's Avatar is mine! I have a strong desire to quit my job and just stay home and read it...

I've added the Rod and Weal banner made by Schurry to the links page, for those who like the whole banner thing. And on the main page is the link for Crowfire's "Top Jacqueline Carey Sites." There aren't many of us yet, but soon, who knows? : )

I found this article that quotes JC. It's from her local paper in Michigan and is about the practice of "blurbing." That's what they call those little quotes you see on books from other authors, raving about that book.

Hey, it's been a while! JC updated the official site a few days early because of her upcoming book tour. Avatar is due on or about April 21st. Elegy for Darkness is done. And the limited editon D'angeline "sacred text" she has mentioned will be called Earth Begotten: The Journey of Blessed Elua. Follow the link for more info on that. I don't think it's available yet.

JC is listed as eligible for the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. Of course, you have to be a member of this year's or last year's World Science Fiction Convention to vote. If I was, I'd vote for her... : D

Two more dates added to the book tour: April 28 at Bay Book Co. in Half Moon Bay, CA (a "stock signing"--I have no idea what that means)and May 1 at Brentano's in Los Angeles. First my hometown and now the bookstore I went to all the time when I was in college. I loved the Century City Brentano's. Sigh, too bad I live on the East Coast now.

HEE! My friend Deborah and I got our copies of Chosen in paperback today. She hasn't read it yet. I just wanted it for the preview of Avatar. The preview isn't long so I finished it quickly. Let's just say Phèdre's 10 years of peace are coming to an end.

Thanks to Danni at House Eglantine for pointing out the Dutch cover of Dart.

NEW KUSHIEL FAN SITE!!! It's called Schurry's 'Kushiel's Dart' Site. Yay! I like having more of us.

The Kirkus Reviews review of Avatar I mentioned before is printed on the Barnes and Noble site. Beware, there are plot spoilers! There are several readers reviews listed as well, but I don't think any of these people have read the book yet. No offense to these people, but why are you giving 5 stars to a book you haven't read? It's just plain silly.

Kushiel's Chosen has made Locus Magazine's 2002 Recommended Reading List in the category Fantasy Novel. I think the books on the list get pared down and those are the Locus Awards nominees and from those the winners are chosen. So Chosen has a good shot! Yay! Last year, Dart won their Best First Novel award.

Locus's Faren Miller had this to say:

In sequences where the imaginary worlds were inspired by old Europe rather than Britain, I particularly admired Kushiel's Chosen by Jacqueline Carey...Last year most of my picks [for best first novel] were "promising," with only Jacqueline Carey transcending that judgement...

It's a tragic day, not just for America, but for anyone on our world who believes that the pursuit of knowledge is a worthwhile endevour. Columbia and all aboard her are lost. I work in the space science field and, in fact, Columbia launched the telescope I work on, the Chandra X-ray Observatory, into space three years ago. I did not know any of the astronauts who died today but I feel their loss very deeply. May they rest in peace.

In happier news, the official site has been updated. In the news: I didn't win the "Women in Fantasy" contest. Aw, shucks. : ) There is a West Coast book tour planned for April. Harrumph! When is Tor going to recognize us East Coast fans?? Lastly, some ideas for "D'angeline Action Figures." Quite funny.

Over last weekend I added one short story to the bibliography (no online version). And a few things about Eisheth to the lore page.

House Eglantine has some interesting news. Apparently, a limited-edition collectable D'angeline "sacred text" book is in the works. More news on that to come from JC herself. And there's an advance copy of Avatar up for sale on eBay. If someone wants to spend $100's for something that will come out in a few months for around $20...that's their own choice. I'll be waiting (albeit with bated breath) til April myself. : )

From the official site: JC is going to be attending ConFusion 2003, a convention in Warren, Michigan, on January 24-26. That's a week from now! Sigh, wish she'd come to a Boston convention... : ) Anyway, the convention program says she will be on the following panels: "SF and Religious Belief," "SF and the Storytelling Tradition," "Weaving a Multi-layered Plotline," and "Sexuality in SF" (now, THAT one's a no-brainer!).

I've added pics of JC to the links page. Two are ones I've found on the web and previously listed here. And another is a scan from Locus magazine. Yay, my scanner is up and working nicely! I have a few other scans that will be added to the page once I've tweaked with them.

According to Amazon, Kushiel's Avatar will be released on December 31, 1969. Get your time machines ready, people! : )

The Fanart Contest is over over at House Eglantine. The first place winner was Servant of Naamah by Avanell. It is utterly amazing. The runner-up was my personal favorite, Joie et Sangoire by Charlyne. This is a link to two versions of this picture from my art page (under the titles Marque and Marque II). But really, all the submissions were wonderful. As a non-artist, I'm totally in awe of all the artists who participated!

Very cool new fanart was sent to me today. It's by 'Ryzellon' and is the marque from the covers of the book, made up of words. Look on the art page.

Happy New Year!!

There's a new contest on the official site. The prize is a "Women in Fantasy" calendar. To enter, you need to send in three words from the books that do not exist in any real language, having been made up by JC. "Anguissette" doesn't count since it was given as an example. Damn, I just checked and "mayhap" is a real word. Dang it!

There is also a new section on the official site, about how to get bookplates and tattoos.

Go to the bibliography page for a link to a nice big image of the cover of Avatar. In the lower right corner, I spy a pyramid!

I added a bit (finally) to the Info and Lore page. Some tidbits on some of the Houses and some new angels.
