Want to read the JC interview in the new issue of Locus Magazine? But having trouble finding a bookstore that carries it? Well, Locus will let you buy the issue with the interview, either as a single or with a subscription. The link has been posted on the official site and I will pass it along: go here. Back to top.

Lord Sebastian posted this on the Kushiels_Readers group from an email JC sent him:
Some members may be interested to know that Dragon Magazine is proposing an article on the Kushiel books, adapting some elements for gaming. It would feature the Cassiline Brotherhood, but if there are other aspects fans who enjoy role-playing games would like to see, I'd love to hear it.

I love that they give out the Nobel Prizes on the day I was born. Congrats, Jimmy!

Just for the hell of it, I added a link to Tor's sample chapter of Kushiel's Chosen. Go to the Bibliography page. I also found some other old stuff during a Google search. There's a review of Dart in German. I don't know what he says, but he gave it 7 out of 10! Here's some pics of JC at a signing last April in Illinois. Romantic Times Magazine has an interview with JC from around the time Dart was released. And they also have an essay by JC about Chosen. Back to top.

I just got my copy of the Dec. '02 Locus with the JC interview. It's definitely a must-have for Carey fans. I don't subscribe to the magazine, but I pick it up often. It always has interesting info on the sf/f field.

I won't reprint the article here (although I will scan in some pics when I get my new scanner from Santa). But here is an excerpt, interesting info on her next book after Avatar:

I am working now on something completely unrelated, a sort of 'palate-cleanser.' It's a standalone with the working title Elegy for Darkness, an epic fantasy that adheres faithfully to the Tolkienesque model—except it's written from a perspective sympathetic to its villains. Essentially, this is a postmodern Greek tragedy featuring the traditional 'minions of the Dark Lord.' I want it to tell a resonant, sweeping story that will engage readers, but I also want to critique epic fantasy and examine the tenets that lie at the heart of the genre, in particular the unquestioning acceptance of a dualist theology. I'm sure this is an idea that's been tossed around a lot, but I don't know of anyone who's actually done it except as satire or comedy, like Mary Gentle's Grunts or Diana Wynne Jones's Dark Lord of Derkholm. What I'm envisioning is somber and stirring and lovely and, well, elegaic. It's definitely a huge challenge, and it's strange to be working in a shifting, multiple third-person POV after being so immersed in Phèdre's voice.

Don't know if I missed it before or if it's new, but there is a small image of the cover for Kushiel's Avatar on the official site. It's the same one we've seen before but I can't tell if they drew the marque on Phèdre's back. Back to top.

The December update on the official site is up. The interview she gave Locus magazine last summer is finally in print, the December 2002 issue of the magazine. I haven't seen it yet myself. It has a big picture of Orson Scott Card (a writer I definitely recommend) on the cover and a smaller picture of JC. Can't wait for the scanner I'm getting for Xmas! : ) JC is doing a reading at the Bookman in Grand Haven, Michigan, on December 21st at 7pm, for those in that neck of the woods.

I got my holiday bookplates in the mail over the Thanksgiving holiday, a nice surprise when I got home from my parents' house. Also included were a bunch of those KD temporary tattoos. Cool! Thanks, JC!

News ripped from House Eglantine: the second half of the German version of Kushiel's Dart is called Die Auserwählte 2: In den Händen der Feinde (The Chosen 2: In the hands of the enemies). Also the fan art contest is now closed to submissions. Go vote for your favorite!

The Book Group's discussion of Dart has officially started. Back to top.

Kushiel's Chosen made it onto the Borders list of the best science fiction and fantasy of 2002. Congrats JC!

The Book Group, sponsored by web-goddess.org, will be discussing Dart. Thanks, Danni, for spotting this. Back to top.

Nothing to do with JC but, Happy Birthday to my dad! 64 years old. Wow!

Some stuff I've added today: Another review of Chosen. And this site, a writer's personal page, also reviews the books. It's called Incitata and has a link to Rod and Weal (thanks!).

Sara Douglass was on the "Women in Fantasy" tour last year with JC and Juliet Marillier. She has an interesting account of the trip on her site. Back to top.

Hey, it's the first of the month and Jacqueline has updated her site, as usual. She gives us a few hints about Avatar. Ugghh, the exquisite torture! : ) There's also a nice plug for the House Eglantine fanart contest, of which the prizes are signed copies of Chosen and Dart. She also has a reading on her calendar for next month. It's in Michigan. Sigh.

RITRO.com has posted the second part of its article on JC. This part is dedicated to her fan following and includes quotes from me, Danielle (Lady Domini) who runs House Eglantine, and fellow fan (and true anguissette!) Victoria. Many thanks to the writer, Tanya Ruys. Back to top.

Tanya from RITRO found this Kushiel wallpaper that someone did. It's a neat blending of stuff from both covers.

According to House Eglantine, there may be a Dutch version of Kushiel's Dart in the works.

Ok, I'm off to Tucson to be a bridesmaid... Back to top.

Check out the German cover for Kushiel's Dart (which is being sold in two volumes in that country). Thanks, Danni!

I found a picture of JC at Westercon on this site. It's the third picture down, her at the right end of the panel table. Back to top.

House Eglantine is sponsoring a fanart contest, with JC's approval. First prize is a signed hardcover Kushiel's Chosen and the winner will be chosen by poll. Sadly, my talent ends with stick figures, but I hope we get some good stuff. It's all still in the planning stages, so check out the Oentalox message board for more details as this develops.

Added to the Links page: an old article on JC from when her Angels book came out and a new Kushiel message board. This board is meant for role-playing. It seems to indicate that people can use actual characters from the book. This may be a violation of copyright, I'm not sure. Do it at your own risk... Not much traffic on it yet. Personally, I'm not interested in any rp-ing right now, I get my fill with Never Winter Nights. Back to top.

JC's official site's monthly update is up. She talks about Amazon's whole book review system. Heh, heh, I have friends who keep track of how their reviews are rated and their placement in the standings. JC has a thicker skin than me, she got a laugh when someone called Kushiel's Dart "manure." I would have cried if someone did that to me! Glad she keeps her head up and rightly so.

House Eglantine's webmistress (damn her! :) has updated with some interesting tidbits. Go to her bio page on JC for some pics of our favorite authoress. She also found another JC story on the web. It's called "Bludemagick". Enjoy!

Also, I added a review of Kushiel's Dart by British fantasy writer Storm Constantine. Publishers often ask writers to do this ("blurbing") so it can be put on the cover of a new book, to make it look good. And Constantine is indeed quoted on the back of Kushiel's Chosen. Not that JC's stuff needs dressing up... :) Back to top.

I found this Kushiel's Chosen 'wallpaper' during a search. It's a manipulation of the KC cover with stuff added. This person has lots of collages for different books and shows, mainly Roswell. Back to top.

There's a description of Kushiel's Avatar now at Amazon. Don't know if it's new or I just missed it before. I'm guessing this is the publisher's jacket blurb. Looks like the story will focus on Phèdre's quest to free Hyacinthe. Hmmm, what about Imriel? Back to top.

House Eglantine was updated yesterday with some news I hadn't heard. Kushiel's Dart was a runner up for the Barnes and Noble Maiden Voyage Award. It's given by readers of their science fiction and fantasy newsletter Explorations for best first novel in the field. I'm a Borders girl myself but these guys ain't so bad so I signed up for the newsletter. They've got good taste.

Also, Danni mentioned on HE that the books had made the bestseller lists at a Boston bookstore. She was referring to Pandemonium Books, a science fiction, fantasy, and gaming specialty store that is located near Harvard University. I've been there many times myself. If you are ever in the area, check it out. Back to top.

While surfing the web I came across this Bookstream Bookwrap site for Kushiel's Dart. Normally I wouldn't make note of a commercial site selling the book but it has some nice little interview video clips with JC talking about the book. Enjoy!

I also found a profile of JC on the site of the culture magazine Midnight Mind. Back to top.

JC did her monthly update of her site. She says she's leaving her day job (in academia, I believe it is) to write full-time. I say good luck to her! There's also a preview of the cover art of Kushiel's Avatar from a Tor 2003 Winter catalogue.

In other news, durn it, the Spectrum Award didn't go to Dart, it went to The Song of the Earth by Hugh Nissenson. Maybe next year with Chosen... Back to top.

More Chosen reviews added. Locus magazine, in their August 2002 print issue, had more on the Locus Awards banquet at Westercon last month:
"Best First Novel went to Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey, who said she was grateful for Tor's support, especially from her editor, Claire Eddy. She also thanked her great-aunt Harriet, who died last month at 87, and had always supported Carey's work, never doubting she could make it."
There were also a few nice pictures, which I will scan in one day when I finally get a scanner hooked up. Back to top.

New stuff added to Reviews and Art. While doing one of my incessant "Kushiel" searches on Google (just to see what pops up), I found the page of JC's literary agent, Jane Dystel. Interestingly, (if you look for her name under "Client List") it says that she is working on a new fantasy novel called Elegy for Darkness. I guess turn-around time is so slow in the publishing business that Avatar is long done and she's on to the next!

JC updated her official site for August. The highlights are Kushiel's Chosen comes out in paperback in March, 2003, and Kushiel's Avatar will come out in hardcover a month later. An interview with Locus is forthcoming. Back to top.

Found this old newspaper article while surfing the web. And two days later (today) the link went dead. It's from a Louisiana paper called the News-Star from September 2001. No search engine on their site (they suck!). But I did save a local copy of the article page for myself so when I get off my ass I will repost it. Back to top.

This interesting tidbit of news comes from German JC fan Olaf Keith:
"The first part of KUSHIEL´S DART will be published in November 2002 by Knaur as DIE GEHEIMNISSE DES NACHTPALAIS (= The Secrets of the Night Palace). It´s called volume one of DIE AUSERWÄHLTE (= The Chosen). Because of the length of the books, they will all be spilt into (at least) two volumes. The second one, however, has not yet been announced. It´ll be a large format pb."

JC will be at Westercon in Los Angeles next week. Damn, wish I still lived in California. New review of Kushiel's Chosen by ZENtertainment on the reviews page. Not a positive review, basically they say they liked Dart better and give thumbs down to Chosen. Their justifications aren't egregious but I do disagree...(big surprise!) Back to top.

I will use this page to, obviously, inform any who are interested in what is going on in the realm of JC and Rod and Weal. One bit of news for now: Kushiel's Dart and Kushiel's Chosen are on the Sidewise Awards for Alternate History reading lists for 2001 and 2002, respectively. The awards for 2001 will be handed out in September at Worldcon, but KD is not one of the finalists. Oh, well. Maybe next year. Back to top.
